I had a business which gave me and my family a wonderful lifestyle. But one weekend that all changed. Virtually overnight our sole supplier went out of business, and before my partners and I knew what hit us, we were out of business too. My income went from really great to nothing, within a few days time.
So, I know how you feel.
I was making payments on two new cars, one was a gold Corvette. I was making payments on an airplane parked at the nearby airport. And we lived in a big home in an upscale Chicago suburb. Suddenly I couldn’t make the payments on any of them. Credit cards that had been so handy for vacations and impulse purchases at the mall instantly became siphons draining the financial life out of me. Within weeks the phone was ringing and the people calling me weren’t happy.
Where’s our payment?
By the next month the phone calls had turned insane. You know where you tell the guy you didn’t send the $50 payment, because you don’t have the money, and he asks you when you’re going to send a $100 payment!
Months after that I found a job but it didn’t pay enough to catch up, so we began to be perpetually-behind-go-round with our creditors. You know what I'm talking about where you rotate the bills you’re going to pay each month, because you can’t afford to pay them all. Talk about revolving debt!
I like to tell people that I responded to this crisis by becoming a great salesperson. I sold the Corvette. I sold my wife’s Olds Regency. I sold the airplane. And parked in the driveway to replace them all was a white Vette, only this one was a Chevette!
I was stunned, disoriented, and depressed. I felt like a failure.
One morning when I was getting ready for work, the face in the mirror looked like a prisoner of war. Tired, old before his time. But then I remember that man in the mirror uttering the first fighting words I’d heard from him in months. 'I will never be this vulnerable again!'
It Was All John Cummutas Debts.
In a flash I realized my financial troubles hadn’t really been caused by my loss of income. Temporary loss of income is a part of everyday life. The pressure cooker I was in had been created by my debts! I had promised away my income for months, years, even decades into the future without interruption. And when I couldn’t deliver on that commitment I was forced to face the reality that I didn’t really own my life.
I was just renting a lifestyle.
When I couldn’t make the payments, my creditors began threatening to repossess my lifestyle. I had called myself a homeowner, a plane-owner, even a car-owner. But I really didn’t own anything. I was just a paying guest, a renter.
Suddenly I was focused. It was one of those moments where everything slows down and you can see it clearly. I knew I had to get rid of all my debts. I could literally feel them hanging from my arms, legs, and neck, like heavy balls and chains. Debts were evil they were draining the life out of me, and I wanted a new life without any debts in it.
That moment changed my life.
