Answering Interview Questions
pg 1 of 2
There are essentially two ways to view an interview. The company doing the interview tries to ask questions to find answers they do not like. Sometimes the questions will seem out of place, from out of the blue and not relating to the job or the company. Second, it is a dialog which provides you the opportunity to explain how you can contribute to the company in a meaningful way.
This article will discuss how you can present yourself in a way for the best chance of getting the job. Your strategy should be to approach the interview fully prepared. And, being able to effectively answer interview questions takes some practice on your part, maybe even some failures along the way. Failures will prepare you for the next interview.
Use Examples
Using examples to answer interview questions is a extremely effective technique to show you as the best choice for the job by building creditability with the interviewer. If you are able to answer tough or unusual questions with a positive response using an example of how you solved a problem in the past. Using examples to demonstrate how you solved problems, saved a company money or made improvements presents you as a leader and go getter.
Example: If asked, ‘did you ever work in a team’ or ‘to describe a team you worked in’ don’t just say, ‘yes, I did’ add how you helped the team or made an improvement in a procedure which resulted in improved productivity.
Answering questions using examples can be a learned behavior. A technique often sited is the acronym S.T.A.R. in remembering this strategy for answering questions:
Situation and Task: describe a situation you were in or a task that needed to be accomplished.
Action: describe the actions you took to accomplish the task.
Result: results of your efforts.
Take Control
Some people are uncomfortable taking control because they are happiest just answering questions during the interview. The point is, you need to take control to make sure you remain in a positive light during the interview. You want to avoid falling into certain traps when answering questions. If asked, do you like working independently or in a team setting, you need to remain diplomatic not taking one side or another.
Keep in mind, you want to not provide any reasons to not get hired. Saying it in another way, avoid providing information that can be used to against you later when the decision to hire you or not is made.
Clear and Concise Answers
A big challenge, balancing the time you given to answer a question adequately duration the short time given to an interview. You need to give as much insightful information as possible when answering interview questions which means giving clear and concise answers.
How can you strike a balance?
1. Think before answering. It is better to take brief moment to pull your story together in your head than to give a thoughtless response.
2. Stick to the facts when you're responding to a question. You want to avoid talking about personal opinions, leave out quirky habits and don't sound judgmental.
3. An interview should be a dialog so ask questions about adequacy of your response, just not with every question you are asked. Asking ‘Is that what you were looking for?’ is fine.
4. Finally, prepare for an interview by going over sample questions in your head or by practicing your responses out loud.
Don't sound rehearsed, sound confident. Breath, relax and be yourself. Confidence can help you even if you hadn't thought through the question being asked during an interview.
Answering Tough Questions
Prepare yourself for a tough interview. One glaring thing about tough interview questions is that they are vague. These vague questions can lead to vague responses and that's a mistake. With vague questions it gives you some latitude in your response. Take advantage of the situation to put your best foot forward.
